COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL EYE EXAMS   Eye Examination
Regular eye exams are an important tool in eye health for detecting and preventing eye diseases and evaluating the overall health of the patient. Some diseases, such as glaucoma, develop gradually without symptoms or vision loss, so patients may not notice that anything is wrong until significant and irreversible damage as been done. Early detection of eye diseases allows for a better choice of treatment options and a reduced risk of permanent damage.
Regularly Scheduled Comprehensive Eye Exams

Patients should schedule a comprehensive eye exam every year. Children should also have annual eye exams to ensure proper development of their vision and prevent any interference with academic achievement. Older adults are often at a higher risk for eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

Even if your eyes are healthy, a regular eye exam will allow the Optometrist to view the blood vessels in the back of the eye. With information obtained during an examination of the eyes, our Optometrists have been able to detect chronic conditions such as cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The early detection of these conditions can lead to early treatment.

The Comprehensive Eye Exam

An eye exam is different than a vision screening, which only tests visual acuity, and is commonly performed by a school nurse or other health care provider. Only your Optometrist can perform a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate the overall health of your eyes and detect any changes that may indicate a vision disorder.

In addition to caring for your vision and the health of your eyes, we make a special effort to explain your condition to you in clear language and
encourage you to ask questions. We value our relationship with you and look forward to helping you maintain good vision and healthy eyes.
MEDICAL EYE EXAMS
In addition to our comprehensive eye examinations, we also provide a wide array of specialty medical services. Sometimes, eye exam results or medical history may indicate that a patient is at risk for a certain condition or disease.

Many eye diseases and conditions can be treated successfully if discovered early, so it is important to have an eye health examination annually. Whether you have a family history of eye disease, were injured, or simply woke up with a red, itchy eye, we can help you!

If we suspect an ocular condition or disease, we will immediately
schedule or perform diagnostic tests to determined our next steps.

DRY EYE TREATMENT

  DRY EYE IS A DISEASE!

Proper diagnosis is the first step toward relief.
Dry eye is one of the most under-diagnosed ocular diseases, but it is the most common reason why patients see an eye care professional.

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by changes in the normal tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface.

In fact, dry eye disease occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or produce poor quality tears. That's why it's essential you get your tears analyzed by your Optometrist.

With each blink, tears spread across the cornea (front surface of the eye) providing lubrication, reduced risk of eye infection and removing foreign material. Excess tears drain into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids. Dry eyes can occur when the tear production and drainage is not in balance.

Untreated Dry Eye can lead to other complications including loss of sight, so delaying treatment is not recommended.

COMPUTER VISION

Have you ever added up the time you spend in front of your computer, tablet, smart phone, or other electronic device? Looking at screens is a normal part of our lives in the 21st century.

Unfortunately, eye problems associated with this activity are also on the rise. Even if you have never had any eye problems before, you may have computer vision syndrome symptoms after a brief amount of screen time.

Even if your symptoms are mild, they can worsen and may cause other vision problems.

Symptoms may include:
• Blurry vision
• Eye Strain and discomfort
• Headaches
• Dry, scratchy eyes
• Neck and/or shoulder pain
The severity and length of computer vision syndrome symptoms depends on how long you spend on the computer, your posture, lighting, glare, the angle of the monitor, and whether or not you have other diagnosed or undiagnosed vision problems. If you already have astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, presbyopia, aging eyes, and/or diabetic eye problems, your computer vision symptoms may worsen. This can even be the case if you already wear prescription eyeglasses or contacts.

Many regular contact lenses and eyeglasses are not designed to reduce the problems caused by computer screens. The best solution is a separate pair of glasses designed for computer use. In essence, a specific tool for a specific task. Our specialized computer glasses are custom designed for your specific computer distance and needs.
CONTACT LENS FITTING AND CORNEAL EVALUATION

Thanks to advances in optical technology, almost everyone can wear contact lenses, regardless of the type or extent of their vision problems. This includes patients with astigmatism, high powers, eye diseases like keratoconus, or those who need bifocal or multifocal lenses. We offer the best in contact lens technology to provide you with optimal vision, comfort, and health.

ARTIFICIAL EYES (Prosthetics)
An ocular prosthesis or artificial eye is a type of craniofacial prosthesis that replaces an absent natural eye. The prosthesis fits over an orbital implant and under the eyelids. Often referred to as a glass eye, the ocular prosthesis roughly takes the shape of a convex shell and is made of medical grade plastic acrylic.

A few ocular prostheses today are made of cryolite glass. A variant of the ocular prosthesis is a very thin hard shell known as a scleral shell which can be worn over a damaged or eviscerated eye.

An ocular prosthesis does not provide vision; this would be a visual prosthesis. Someone with an ocular prosthesis is totally blind on the affected side and has monocular (one sided) vision.
SWIMWEAR

Wearing our swim goggles is more than just for the ability to see better under water. It also serves as a safety device by reducing fog that many have associated with inferior swim wear,  harmful irritants and chemicals from reaching your sensitive eyes. We have a larger selection of prescription and non-prescription eyewear designed exclusively for the water. All our lenses offer UV protection as well as look good which makes them ideal for indoor or outdoor swimming!

SAFTEY EYEWEAR
WHAT IS YOUR SIGHT WORTH TO YOU?
Our goal is to reduce eye injuries and eye strain. (the #1 health complaint within the workplace)

Why risk losing precious eyesight when wearing safety glasses or protective goggles can keep your eyes safe for a lifetime of good vision?

Each year millions of people all over the world injure their eyes at work and at home. Many children and adults suffer eye injuries during sports. It’s a well-known fact that proper protective eyewear could prevent up to 90 percent of all eye injuries.

Safety eyewear must conform to a higher standard of impact resistance than regular eyeglasses. This higher standard applies to both the lenses and the frames of safety glasses and goggles.

Whether it’s occupational or recreational, Harcourt Carter Optical can help you to learn more about the safety glasses and goggles that suit your lifestyle best.

CHILDREN'S EXAM - 1 in 4 children are at risk from undiagnosed vision problems!
Many vision screenings test only for distance visual acuity. While the ability to see clearly in the distance is important, it does not give any indication as to how well the eyes focus up close or team together for the child’s schoolwork demands. It also does not give any information about the internal or external health of the eyes.

A change in vision is often not realized until your child can’t see the board at school or has trouble reading a text book. They often do not know their eyes are not working efficiently and are unable to communicate that a problem exists. The increased stress on the child’s inadequate visual system can cause fatigue and lack of overall desire to do their schoolwork resulting in less than optimal grades and sometimes behavioral disorders.

Vision is our most valuable sense. 90% of a child’s learning is through their visual system. Early detection can save years of struggling and harmful impact on your child’s ability to learn.

Please have your child’s eyes checked annually. Schedule your child's eye exam today.
